The Story

Comicpalooza was bringing voice actor Greg Chun to Houston as part of a panel on voice acting. While reviewing potential guests, Greg immediately stood out, not because I recognized his name, but because I recognized the long list of characters he had voiced.

That realization became the editorial hook.

Unlike on-screen actors, voice actors rarely become household names, even when their work reaches millions of people. Audiences can usually connect a face to a movie or television show, but the performers behind animated characters and video game heroes often remain invisible. Unless a major Hollywood actor is attached to a role, viewers rarely know who brings those characters to life.

Rather than producing another celebrity interview, I wanted the segment to create a moment of recognition. The goal was to introduce viewers to the person behind the voices they already knew while exploring the skill, versatility, and persistence required to build a successful career in voice acting.

Finding the Voice

Before the interview, I immersed myself in Greg's career by watching long-form interviews, researching his major roles, and learning about his transition from computer programmer to professional voice actor. I was particularly interested in understanding how he entered such a competitive industry and what experiences shaped his career.

That research shifted my approach. Instead of organizing the interview around a chronological list of credits, I built the conversation around discovery. I wanted viewers to experience the surprise of realizing they had heard Greg's voice countless times without ever knowing who he was.

To support that storytelling, I gathered footage spanning his career, including clips from video games, animation, Squid Game, his professional demo reel, and behind-the-scenes studio recordings he had shared on social media. Those visuals connected Greg's voice to the characters audiences recognized while giving viewers a rare look inside the recording process.

Because the interview was pre-recorded, I also approached the edit as part of the storytelling. Rather than presenting a straightforward Q&A, I paced the package around moments of recognition, using visuals and sound to reinforce the connection between Greg and his performances.

Outcome

The finished segment introduced viewers to a profession they experience every day but rarely think about. By balancing Greg's personal journey with examples of his work, the interview made voice acting more accessible while highlighting the dedication required to succeed in the industry.

The conversation felt natural and engaging, allowing Greg's personality to come through as he reflected on his unconventional career path. Deborah was able to interact with him conversationally rather than relying heavily on prepared questions, creating a relaxed interview that encouraged thoughtful responses.

Following the broadcast, the story was edited for digital and social platforms, extending its reach beyond television.

Reflection

This project reinforced one of my favorite parts of producing: helping audiences discover the people behind the work they already love.

As producers, it's easy to focus on booking recognizable names. I find it just as rewarding to introduce viewers to someone they've never heard of by connecting them to something they instantly recognize. In this case, the story wasn't simply about Greg Chun's career—it was about revealing the artistry behind performances that millions of people have experienced without ever seeing the performer.

For me, the most effective entertainment stories don't just promote an event or profile a guest. They create moments of discovery that leave audiences looking at familiar things in an entirely new way.
